So you’ve secured that elusive internship and now you want to ensure that you get the absolute most out of it, well here are my top tips to do so;
- Be proactive- once you have finished a task that has been set ask what else needs doing, if you show yourself to be a productive worker they will give you more tasks often of increasing difficulty
- Talk to your colleges- when you have a not so busy period (perhaps over lunch) ask colleges about their jobs, what academic backgrounds they come from and If they have any advice.
- Take a notebook and pens- I know during my law work experience I wrote a journal each day of the cases I read and those in court. I also wrote about the day-to-day workings of the court.
- Always be on time and be prepared to stay late. Showing dedication from the off, makes you look top notch as an intern and gives you a better chance of getting another internship or even a job from the firm
- Expect to make lots of cups of tea- remember you are at the bottom of the pecking order so don’t act above your station, others will not appreciate it.
Sometimes you will end up in place with a super efficient internship programme with lots for you to do, while other times you may feel almost in the way. Don’t let yourself be disheartened and don’t let one placement put you off a career, for every work place is different.
